Covid-19 Relief

Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. When the lockdown was announced in late March 2020, the large slum-settlement spread across the suburbs of Kurla and Ghatkopar were caught unawares. Shops, factories and offices were shut down, hospitals and clinics became inaccessible, schools closed and local services were crippled. Without notice, livelihoods disappeared, food became scarce and medicines became unaffordable. As a commitment to the community that has nurtured Sahyog for more than 20 years, we took on relief work in earnest to address the widespread distress we were seeing around us.

Our organizational policy of hiring, skilling and nurturing local women as staff paid rich dividends. Notwithstanding the ban of transport, more than half of our staff were able to reach their workplace by foot. With years of experience and abundant leadership skills, they coordinated activities, mobilized volunteers and organised logistics with practiced ease. As a result, despite our small size and limited resources, we were able to reach more than 1000 families and 3000 individuals in the four months of the lockdown. We were able to mobilize nearly 80 community volunteers who worked side-by-side with us, lending more strength to our efforts. With our ears to the ground, we were able to adapt and innovate to respond to the rapidly changing situation appropriately.

  • Starting with the most essential aid – food, medicines and sanitary supplies, we moved on to addressing the emotional and educational needs of children through educational and cultural activities. We also utilized the time and resources available to us to promote skill development of the youth in the community.

As we head towards a phased unlocking, families are picking up the pieces and trying to rebuild their lives. While providing for the bare necessities, there are accumulated debts to be repaid and new means of livelihoods to be secured. Sahyog wants to provide support, not merely to help families to survive, but also to secure a better future.

Forthcoming Activities

  • We will continue to provide food and medical aid to the most vulnerable families.
  • We are also offering guidance and psycho-social support to help pregnant women and mothers of infants, senior citizens, children and adults with disability and patients with chronic illness access suitable medical and rehabilitation services.
  • To ensure that children remain interested, motivated and curious, we will continue to organize camps and workshops, facilitated by local volunteers offering both online and one-to-one inputs.
  • Our home-libraries will make books available again to children, provoking their interest in reading and learning.
  • We will provide financial support to meet the costs of school fees for the most needy students at risk of dropping out.
  • Study material will be distributed to all school going children.
  • We are linking students in higher education to scholarships so that they can continue their education. Our online skill-development programmes will bolster their development.
